Properly plan all processes with warehouse management

Warehouse management refers to the administration and monitoring of a warehouse and its processes.

One of the main goals of warehouse management is to ensure that inbound and outbound operations run smoothly and cost-effectively, thus supporting efficient intralogistics. Warehouse management helps prevent problems such as production interruptions or stoppages due to material shortages.

In the past — and still in rare cases today — warehouse management was performed manually, for example using index cards. However, the most common method today is the use of special warehouse management software, known as a Warehouse Management System (WMS), which controls, manages, and monitors all warehouse processes.

In a warehouse management program, data such as:

  • stock locations,
  • storage costs,
  • master item data,
  • expiry dates,
  • serial numbers,
  • price lists,
  • customer and delivery information

…is maintained. Inventory is recorded and monitored, picking lists are generated, and goods receipts and dispatches are logged.

All item-related information is stored as well. Ideally, warehouse management should be integrated with the company's ERP system. This allows data such as inventory levels and remaining quantities to be transmitted from the warehouse management system to the ERP system and managed centrally.
