Automated small parts storage

Automated warehouse specifically designed for small parts

What is an automated small parts warehouse?

Automated small parts warehouses are specially designed for storing low-volume units such as plastic bins, containers, or boxes. These centralized systems are used to efficiently and securely store small components, significantly contributing to the optimization of picking and logistics processes — offering comfort and efficiency in daily operations.

How Does It Work?

  • ERP control and integration: The system is fully automated and typically operated via a computer terminal connected to an ERP system. Once the required items are entered into the warehouse management software, the control software manages access to the storage containers within the small parts warehouse. These are then automatically transported to the user processing the order. Like all Hänel systems, the automated small parts warehouse operates based on the “goods-to-person” principle.
  • Operational flow: The ERP or WMS sends the list of items to the warehouse software, which controls the retrieval of the appropriate tray and delivers it to the picking area. Once the items are retrieved, the tray is automatically returned to the storage system.

Customizing storage space

  • Single or multiple depths: Depending on workflow needs, one or more containers can be placed in a single compartment — referred to as single-depth (one container) or multi-depth (two or more).
  • Detailed support: For very small items, trays can be subdivided, allowing multiple distinct articles to be stored in a single unit. This mixed organization must be supported by the warehouse management software to prevent confusion between very similar products.

Advantages of an automated small parts storage system

An automated small parts warehouse allows for short access times and, thanks to fully automated storage and retrieval processes, increases operational efficiency. Even with a large variety of items, throughput is high, while storage space is optimally used.
With this system, small parts can be stored in bins, crates, or cardboard boxes, saving space and remaining quickly accessible on demand.
Wherever high throughput, a large assortment of items, and a limited quantity per SKU are present, the automated small parts warehouse becomes an efficient and cost-effective storage solution.

Available solutions for small parts storage

Hänel is one of the leading manufacturers of innovative automated storage technologies. With the Hänel Rotomat®, the German manufacturer offers the perfect system for optimal small parts storage. Operating on the paternoster principle, the Hänel Rotomat® provides numerous advantages over traditional storage systems — making it particularly efficient for small parts warehousing.

The Hänel Lean-Lift® is also an effective alternative to traditional small parts storage. Like the Hänel Rotomat®, the Lean-Lift® utilizes the full height of the warehouse ceiling, offering maximum storage capacity with minimal floor space.

Compared to classic small parts storage systems, expanding storage capacity later with the Hänel Lean-Lift® is easily achievable.
